Today, I am preparing for the dry weather (Perlier Honey Body Butter)…

It’s getting cold and that means that it’s more important now to have a good body cream to lock in the moisture of the skin! I was excited to have been sent Perlier’s Imperial Honey Body Butter complimentary of iFabbo (@PerlierUSA #PerlierOnHSN). This is the second Perlier Product that I’ve tried (I’ve previously tried a body scrub).

The jar looks small, but it’s definitely densely packed. The body butter is formulated with the honey of black bees and royal jelly to nourish the skin with moisture. It’s definitely got a whipped butter feel (imagining opening a tub of I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter! … haha). The smell is a bit too sticky and sweet for me but it’s worth it mostly because a little goes a long way. It leaves my skin feeling silky and smooth.

Today, I bring a little luck (Allure Free Stuff August 2013 Goodies Pt 1)…

It’s been a while! I’ve been a bit MIA lately, but I finally have some time to myself and am in a pensive mood. It’s crazy how some things in life really do come so unexpectedly.

When one door closes, another door opens; but we so often look so long and regretfully upon the closed door, that we do not see the ones which open for us.
-Alexander Graham Bell

It really seems that a lot of luck has flown my way in the past few days. However, I’m beginning to wonder if this is really considered luck. Maybe it’s just that, in the words of Taylor Swift (<– yes, click on that link), “for the first time, what’s past is past.” Now I can actually see all the new open doors: new people and experiences have come into my life. Speaking of luck, I’ve apparently won a lot of goodies from the Allure Free Stuff August 2013 Giveaway. Here’s a look at the first few that have come my way. I definitely have positive experiences with the cleanser and the hair treatment. Have you tried any of these products? Have you won anything from the giveaway?

Left to Right:

  1. Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser (retail value: $11.99)
  2. NYC New York Color Lip Stain in Smooch Proof (retail value: $4.99)
  3. Rimmel London ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in Brown, ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in Black, Lasting Finish 1000 Kisses Lip Pencil in Rose Quartz, Match Perfection Blush in Light, and Glam’Eyes Quad Eye Shadow in Smokey Brun (retail value: $24.95)
  4. Nuance Salma Hayek Leave-in Treatment (retail value: $9.99)

I’m excited. I still have a few more products coming in, but so far, the total value of all the free goods I’ve received has come to ~$51.92 which is more than I expected. 🙂 🙂

Happy Veterans Day!

Today, I have a little secret after making my own skincare products…

An idea has been zooming all around my brain lately… but it only solidified Wednesday night while I was learning how to make lip balm, facial toner mist, and a body salt scrub. It’s still in the works, so I won’t say much now but it’ll be a long process of experimentation, but I am so very happy to let you lovely readers in on it! Maybe you’ll get to try out the end-product 😉 I’ll tell you about the journey along the way. As for last night’s event, I had so much fun! I realized the process of making my own skincare products brought a combination of three things that I Iove together: culinary arts, science, and beauty.

Is this a cooking class?

I’m surprised that the livingsocial venue (at least the one in DC) is so spacious! And I didn’t realize the turnout would be so great. Jill Dickens from Evolve Skin taught the class. Her story was really interesting and also inspiring. Something she emphasized quite often can be summarized in her following statement –

If you can’t eat it, it shouldn’t be going on your skin.

For the skincare products, it’s best to use distilled water. In this case we were saving water, so the water used above will be the same one as the one used for the toner. The double boiler method is used a lot in making these products. Very simple to do. Boil a pot of water, put another bowl on top (something that can stand the heat, of course), and voila! You’ll be able to avoid having your products burn or getting into contact with water.

Lip Balm

Here’s the coconut oil in our double boiler. Coconut oil can be help with dry skin and can moisturize your hair.

Candilila wax (left), derived from a Mexican shrub, is used as a substitute for beeswax. If you’re ever working with a recipe that calls for beeswax and you want to use this as a substitute, you only need to use one-half of it.

Unrefined cocoa butter (right) was added. It looked like shredded cheese to me. It can help in extending shelf life for one year and can also help for stretch marks. Keeping this in mind 🙂

A drop of Vitamin E (d-alpha-tocopherol) was added. It can also extend shelf life and is a very thick oil.

Pipette the mixture into your lib balm tubes. Set it aside and let it cool. And voila! Here you have the lip balm.

Green Tea Facial Toner Mist

The base of the toner here is green tea. Green tea is an antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals and helps to maintain skin elasticity. Aloe vera was added; it can be used for dry patches and for sunburns. Lavendar oil, an antiseptic, was also used. It helps to get excess impurities out of your skin and is good for wrinkles, sunburn, and stress (calming aromatherapy). The toner has a shelf life of about 2-3 weeks if placed in the refrigerator. If you add in a drop of Vitamin E oil, you can extend the shelf life for ~2-3 months. Pretty sweet, huh?

Detoxifying Body Scrub

This is a body scrub not for the face but rather for the body. If you were making a scrub for the face, you would need to use a much finer salt. Epsom salt is detoxifying and can be found almost everywhere (CVS, Walgreens, etc). Other ingredients included castille soap, extra virgin olive oil (penetrates deep into the skin and provides long-lasting deep moisture by providing a shield for the skin). You could replace the EVOO with grape seed oil or some other veggie-ish oil. We went for peppermint oil to sooth and cool the skin. It helps to clear, awaken, and brighten your [tired] skin. It’s anti-bacterial, anti-viral and energizing. Quite simple… combine all the ingredients into a bowl and you’ve got your body scrub.

The finished products 🙂 Remember to store everything in air-tight containers and keep in a cool place. Have you ever made your own beauty products? Please do share! 🙂

Today, I am loving Cool Britannia!! (Glossybox Best of Britain Limited Edition Review)

Downton Abbey is coming back to the UK on September 22! I vowed to never watch it again after how Season 3 ended, but I just can’t seem to keep away from it. Chelsea FC is an English football club. We love the royal family (and the royal baby is adorbs). Not to mention, I believe my current crush is English (hahahaha or I just have a really bad sense of such things and he just has a Southern accent… um, not the same thing? … uh… right). Do you see a trend? We/I kind of love cool Britannia! Glossybox does too… I was so excited to receive my Glossybox Best of Britain (Limited Edition) today! 🙂

If you’re unfamiliar with Glossybox, it’s a subscription box (it’s about $20 a month depending on your subscription plan). I recently opted out because I wanted to cut back on my spending… I did enjoy Glossybox when I had it (check out my previous boxes here). I’ve also purchased their Mother’s Day Limited Edition box which I enjoyed. I’m even happier with my Best of Britain box!

Glossybox has the cutest packaging!

Each box comes with a Glossybox Union Jack accessory bag, a small bag that is great for traveling. I have too many random bags, so expect this in a future giveaway 🙂

Steamcream All-in-One Natural Moisturizer for Face Body & Hands (2.65 oz / $19.50)
This is probably one of my favorite products in this box. The light scent is perfect, giving it a very “natural” and “handmade” feel. It’s got a very light, whipped texture (sour cream?) that I love! I’ll be using it for my dry elbows and knees as fall and winter coming in.

Mitchell and Peach Luxury Hand Cream (2.1 fl oz / $26.00)
EXCITED. I’ve been using my MOR luxury hand cream from my previous Blush box a little too quickly… so this will be a perfect replacement. This one’s got Vitamin E, shea butter, and English honey to soothe your hands. I just used some and it’s oh so light, delightful, smells wonderful… and the best part is that it absorbs very easily.

Batiste Dry Shampoo blush (1.6 fl oz / $2.30)
I recently purchased the full-size version of this on my TJ Maxx haul. Love it! I use it daily to give my hair a nice texture/body/shape/shine. It smells nice & has a nice cooling effect when you spray it on… this is a perfect travel-size version!

HD Brows Grow Baby Grow ($45.60)
Eh… I think this is the last of my concerns. If anything, my eyebrows are too bushy and need to STOP growing. Thus, I can’t comment on this product. But if this is something you want to try, do keep an “eye” out… as it’ll probably appear in a future giveaway 🙂

MeMeMe Cosmetics Beat the Blues Skin Illuminator in Pearl Pink (0.41 fl oz / $8.30)
I’m EXCITED, again. Now when I stay up too late watching shows/dramas or getting stressed out by work/studies/apps, I can fight the dullness of my skin with this illuminator. Iridescent is the key word here!

Nails Inc. Kensington Caviar Top Coat (0.33 fl oz / $18.20)
That is some expensive Top Coat. They say it’s got 45-second dry-time formula, which is true. Dried really quickly! Gives your nail polish a little (tiny bit) of added shine! I can’t comment on chipping since I just applied it tonight.

NailGirls London WHITE#1 (0.33 fl oz / $12.90)
Um… I’ve never tried white nail polish. According to Glossybox’s description, it’s this season’s trend. I guess it can look alright… but I don’t think it’s work-place appropriate. It would good for my coworkers to NOT think that I just applied a ton of white-out from the supplies closet onto my nails. LOL. But it’ll be good for a french look 🙂

Helen É Lasting Lip Colour in Raspberry (0.12 oz / $12.20)
I love the creaminess to this lipstick. It goes on so smoothly and nicely… and the color is very vibrant. However, raspberry is a bit too dark for me. But I’ll hold onto it… and maybe if I need to have a more mature or brooding look, I can make use of this shade.

photo

Final Thoughts? The value of the box came to $145, which definitely covers what I paid for it ($40). However, personally, this box is worth $100 (since I won’t be using the HD brows)… but that’s still a great value! I really loved that the box covered skincare, makeup, nail care, and hair care. A really great Limited Edition box. I’m really glad I was able to grab one of these 🙂 Did you get this box? Have you gotten previous Glossybox Limited Edition Boxes? What are you thoughts? Would love to hear them 🙂

Until next time~ (my birchbox also came tonight… so next time probably means another review tomorrow hehe). Good night~!

Today, I continue my Journey to the East with Natural Aqua Gel…

First, just a quick reminder about our Beauty Box Giveaway. You’ve still got lots of time to enter 🙂 Hope y’alls are having a lovely Sunday evening. Sunday evenings are a time I reserve for myself… and pampering! Tonight will be a facial/spa night with Raanjhanaa (a Bollywood movie I have been dying to watch… I found the full movie !!!). If you haven’t been following, I’m starting a Journey to the East beauty series. Last time, I mentioned how through a Youtube video, I found out about the use of a foaming net to cleanse your face. As it goes with YouTube videos, I went on a video spiral and stumbled upon this interesting product from Japan: Cure Natural Aqua Gel.

3bed8bc4150a11e3873722000a1fcfc8_7

In the video, I saw someone use one pump of this clear gel. She left it on her face for a few seconds and started massaging and little clumps of dead skin and dirt came off! What sort of sorcery and magic is this?!?!?! I had to get my hands on this product to try.. it’s a bit pricey but it seems that the bottle can last a while. If you’re interested, I purchased mine (250 ml) here on Amazon.

Cure Directions

image via japalang.sg

According to Cure, the product –

  • Is free from preservatives, fragrance, artificial coloring or alcohol
  • Contains 90% revitalized hydrogen water
  • Contains natural plant extracts from aloe vera, gingko, and rosemary
  • Prevents enlarged pores, blackheads, pimples, blemishes and dull skin tone.

I’ve been using this product every other day for about two weeks now. I have yet to detect any noticeable differences. It’s a clear, water-based gel (really nice for sensitive skin). It works best when you’ve dried your skin. The first time I used it, my forgot to dry my face after cleansing, and everything just rolled right off my face. 😛 After about 10-15 seconds, I started massaging and it’s not a lie! Little dead skin thingies start rolling off! I’m still confused as to what this “reaction” is and what these “white clumps” are. But I’ll let you know if I find out. Have you used this product before? Do you think it’s something you’d be willing to try?

Last Thoughts?
Pros: Easy/quick to use, Immediate result, Gentle to the Skin, Water-based, Fragrance-free

Cons: I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IS HAPPENING (:P), Expensive, Difficult to find

Would I purchase again? I’m undecided at the moment. But I think I might!

Look at that! My dead skin!!

Today, I begin my Journey to the East Beauty Series…

This Journey to the East started out with a friend of mine telling me about a foaming net. I remember at the time not really paying attention to the subject because I just did not understand the purpose of it. So we’re using a mini-loofah to cleanse our faces? Why? These were my first thoughts. However, later that evening, I stumbled upon this foaming net concept two more times: 1) in a youtube video (I don’t remember which video I clicked on now) and 2) Marie mentioned it in her NYC Chinatown haul post. Something I’ve never heard of before came into my life 3 times on that very day. Well, I guess that’s a sign 😛 The items that will be featured in “The Journey to the East” series are listed at the end of this post.

I’m just going to be talking about the foaming net today. It supposedly makes your foam cleanser foamy so that it can be gentle to your skin and not dry it out. I’ll bring my review of the foaming cleansers and the exfoliator next time! 🙂 The foaming net is really easy to use and pretty self explanatory but I’ve listed directions below… well mostly for fun 🙂

The particular foaming net that I bought comes with the net and 3 mini loofah’s inside. It also comes with a hook which I can attach to my mirror 🙂 Easy storage.

First, wet your foaming net with lukewarm water 🙂

Then add a small amount of your facial cleanser to the net (dime size is sufficient).

Create some friction, whether that’s rubbing between your palms or squeezing the net. Add a little more of the water to create a generous lather.

Ta da! You’ve got lots of foam… cleanse your face gently with it!

Verdict.  I’ve been using this net for almost two weeks now and find that my face is feeling smoother and brighter. BUT that could also be psychological. Either way, I think I’ll continue to use the foaming net. One added benefit is that it can sure make your cleanser last for a lot longer since you don’t have to use as much of it. Saves money? Yep, I’ll take this one! 🙂 Have you used a foaming net before? Did you get any results? If you’ve never heard of this before, do you think you’ll be likely to use it?

****

Journey to East Beauty Series – Product List

I picked up the the two foaming cleansers and the perfect oil at my local Chinese grocery store. I found the foaming net and the cure aqua gel (exfoliator) on Amazon. If you’re looking to find these items and do not have a physical store you can go to, I’ve provided the links for amazon at the end of this post (there might be even better deals on the internet, so I suggest you search around).

Today, I am enjoying new music and new samples (Birchbox August 2013)…

Allo! My Birchbox arrived yesterday. I’ve noticed that I’ve started to become less and less enthusiastic when it comes to opening my Birchbox. I must be spoiled from my boxes (Allure box, Blush, NewBeauty) that give me lots of full-size goodies that these little samples just don’t really do much for me.

But if you’re looking for an introductory subscription box, this is still one of the best ones to try out, IMHO.

And actually, the more I think about this Birchbox, the more content I am feeling 🙂 It was a good value box (valued at $29.29), all the products are products that I would use…. and all were pretty decently sized this time. Okay, happy gal! 😀 What did you receive in your box? Did you like it?

August 2013 – BIRCHBOX

  • EVOLVh UltraShine Moisture Conditioner (2 oz / $5.88) – I received this product in my TotalBeauty mystery collection… it’s a perfect travel size conditioner. I’ll definitely be using it!
  • derma e Hydrating Mist (2 oz/ $13.50) – FULL SIZE! – FULL SIZE products make me happy! This is a very light and refreshing mist. My face felt a little smoother after spraying it on… dunno if that’s a psychological thing….
  • stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick (.03 oz / $6.60) – The color is too bright for me… so I’ll most likely gift it or add it into a future giveaway (we’ll definitely be having one soon :D)
  • whish Exfoliating Body Wash (0.75 oz/ $2.75) – I used this last night … it smells good, has fine beads… my only complaint is that it’s a bit runny, so I feel like you might end up losing a lot of the wash.
  • whish Deodorant Swipes (1 wipe/ $0.53) Interesting concept… This would be perfect to keep in my bag in case I ever forget deodorant O_O hahaha

And as for new music, Lily & Madeleine are coming out with an album in October! Charkie first introduced me to them and I LOVE THEM. Here ya go… a preview for their new album!
