I almost always start conversations with the question, “Do you speak English?” This is of course said in my American accent, despite the fact that we are in Hungary. Where no one ever claimed that the official language was English. I’m annoyed at myself for asking, and I wouldn’t blame anyone for raising an eyebrow and retorting, “Do you speak Hungarian?”
Alas, nem. I hope to soon, though. In the meantime, I really need an opening line that’s less rude.
